Project Luanshya

The Luanshya Family Home

Why has Luanshya been chosen?

In Zambia the mortality, due to HIV|AIDS, is extremely high with an average life probability of not more than forty years.
This dramatic problem is the main cause of the ever growing number of orphaned children.
Giving asylum to these children, as well as providing them with efficient prevention, medical care and assistance is how we operate in order to be able to face, globally, this drama.

The project

Pamo has opened, in Luanshya, a “Family Home” where the orphan or abandoned children can be given hospitality and where their growth and education can be controlled. The choice to give hospitality to girls has been determined by the fact that they are more discriminated.
The home, donated by and Italian business man and re modernized by us, is made up of two flats surrounded by 2,500 sq. m. of land.

A prosperous idea of the future

Once the building had been completed the Welfare Office made us responsible for 18 children - with ages ranging from four to eleven years of age - who were to be looked after by two “mothers”.
The children attend the public school at Luanschya and the kindergarten and the two mothers care for them so well after school that, having done scholastic tests, they resulted to be among the first to classify.

The Family Home in Luanshya is sustained by a group of beneficiaries who have committed themselves to give their support for a few years. Without a similar guarantee it wouldn't have been wise to accept the responsibility of looking after the children.

Since we have reached the maximum number acceptable to be considered a Family Home and not wanting to create a structure like an orphanage the decision we are now faced with is- should we keep things as they are or would it be a good idea to open another Family Home? Obviously the Luanshya Welfare Office are 'pushing' towards the opening of a second Home but this is not possible until we have a group of at least fifteen protectors who commit themselves in the medium term. If, among our readers, there is someone who wishes to promote a new group we could study, together, the possibility of duplicating the existing structure.

Our 'dream', in the medium term, is to build a second Home in which to house 15/20 children but our long term wish is to open a small kindergarten for about 30 infants, not necessarily living in the Home, where we could guarantee at least one meal a day and via which they could receive a minimal preparation to so qualify to attend the city's junior school.
